Welcome Tilman Adair

Welcome Tilman Adair

tilman adairYou may recall that the very first priority recommendation from the Envision Committee was to hire an Executive Director as part of a shared leadership team. The leadership team’s mandate is to further develop our organizational effectiveness, our connections with each other, our spiritual growth, and a culture of stewardship. As the former chair of the Envision Committee and a member of Session, it is my pleasure to introduce to you our new Executive Director, Tilman Adair.

Tilman brings over 20 years of experience in not-for-profit leadership that includes a truly impressive track record in fund-raising, executive management, volunteer leadership, and achievement of strategic outcomes. His skills and experience, in combination with those of Ian and Cindy, will create a new shared leadership dynamic to achieve the Envision goals that Session has adopted.
Tilman, his wife Debra, and their daughter Gracelyn have been participating in Montview activities for several months. Their grown son Parker lives in Omaha.

Daily Worship Booklet – Advent, Christmas, Epiphany 2011 – 2012

Daily Worship Booklet – Advent, Christmas, Epiphany 2011 – 2012

Click here for the Daily Worship Booklet.

The booklet can also be picked up at the church.

This booklet is intended to infuse Advent with a meditative focus.  Each day’s words include a Bible text from the Revised Common Lectionary, readings which we share with many Christians in many parts of the world.  Some of these readings are used in Sunday worship services each week.

The readings begin on Thanksgiving Day and continue through Epiphany, January 6th, 2012.

People of all ages might enjoy using an Advent Wreath, with candles for each of Advent’s four Sundays and a central candle for Christmas Day.

For each day there is a stanza or two from a hymn to be sung or read together.  If you would like a Presbyterian Hymnal or a Sing the Faith Hymnal for your home, please call (800) 227-2872.

A note to parents:  Since most of us do not feel qualified to teach theology or Biblical interpretation to our children, we tend to avoid that kind of discussion altogether and hope that “experts” will perform that function.  The “For Children” sections for each day are intended to empower us parents and to engage our children at the level of the story itself.  Feel free to adapt the words in a way which will be helpful for your own children.

Rather than describing Biblical dates with the language of BC and AD, this booklet uses the phrases, “before the common era” and “common era,” abbreviated BCE and CE.

Heartfelt wishes for a meaningful celebration of Advent and Christmas.

~Peter Hulac

Montview Lectureship presents Amy-Jill Levine

University Professor of New Testament & Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University
November 4 at 7 pm
Back to Eden: The Bible & Sexuality
The couple in the Garden of Eden are naked and not ashamed. How did we get from paradise and procreation to sexism and shame? How can the blessings of Eden be regained? And is Eve to be blamed, or praised?
November 5 at 9 am
Adultery, Murder, & Politics: David & Bathsheba
The household of King David – the sweet singer, the mighty warrior, the divine son – is the setting for adultery, murder, and rape. Why does the biblical text cast David in a morally ambiguous role? How do our responses to him inform us about our own morality?
Jesus, Gender, and Sexuality
The popular perception that Jesus was a first-century feminist and that Mary Magdalene was the mother of his child  is compelling for many. It is also historically inaccurate, based in anti-Jewish stereotypes, and not good news for women or men. How does history correct this false impression, recover the true story of the women who followed Jesus, reveal Jesus’ remarkable teachings about family values?
Tickets (General Seating)
$15 for one lecture
$40 for all three lectures
$70 for the Patron’s dinner and all lectures
Students with ID are free

Welcome Rev. Peter Tibi from South Sudan, the world’s newest nation

Welcome Rev. Peter Tibi from South Sudan, the world’s newest nation

Welcome Rev. Peter Tibi from South Sudan, the world’s newest nation

The Rev. Peter Tibi, Visiting International Peacemaker for the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUSA) will be visiting the Presbytery of Denver  from October 13- 17 of 2011.  Rev. Tibi works in the area of conflict transformation among the peoples of South Sudan, the world’s newest country.

After two decades of a brutal civil war that killed 2 million people and displaced millions more, Sudan split into two nations following a constitutional referendum.  Now, how will the people of these two nations hold tight to the peace?   Following wars that have occupied the great portion of two  generations’ lives, how can such a traumatized people break a cycle of violence that seems to have become ingrained within the culture itself?  In the midst of such ravaged infrastructure, where communication and interaction with other communities and government are so difficult, how can the people obtain the civic education needed to be effective members of a democratic society?

The churches of Sudan asked these exact questions and responded with the creation of RECONCILE. Rev. Tibi has served as the Executive Director ofRECONCILE, International, since November of 2009.  He received his Bachelor of Divinity from Bethany Divinity College in Dothan, Alabama; his B.A. from the University of Gloucestershire, UK; and his Masters in Theological Studies from Bethany Divinity College and Theological Seminary. Rev. Tibi has served as the Principal at Imatong Bible College in Juba, Sudan. He served as an administrator and Assistant Executive Secretary for Africa Inland Church-Sudan, and worked within AIC for 13 years. After this, he moved on to the New Sudan Council of Churches, where he served as the Deputy Executive Secretary; at the end of the war when the councils merged, he worked with the Sudan Council of Churches as Acting Executive Secretary and General Secretary, all over a span of five years.

Please come hear Rev Tibi speak about Sudan, about peacemaking, and about his personal experiences, at one of the following times

Friday 10/14/11, 10:30AM – 12:00 PM, at the Presbytery Centre, Rev. Tibi will share in-depth discussion of his work as well as talk about Christian Conflict transformation.

Saturday 10/15/11, 10:00AM-12:00PM, Rev. Tibi will share stories about the conflict in Sudan and peacemaking efforts at an event hosted by RASI at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.

Sunday 10/16/11, Rev Tibi will preach at Green Mountain Presbyterian church and have a discussion with people over lunch.

9/11 Interfaith Service Reactions and Comments

9/11 Interfaith Service Reactions and Comments

9/11 Interfaith Service Reactions and Comments

“When I saw the imam, and discovered that the group of gentlemen sitting in front of me were a delegation from Afghanistan, I was shocked to realize how much deeply repressed anger and resentment I had toward them.  In my mind and my heart I thought, “You did this… you people did this!  How dare you stand there in front of us after the suffering you’ve caused.”  In that moment I wanted to hurt them as much as I was hurt, as much as we all were hurt.  I was surprised and angry at myself for having such terrible thoughts.  I guess that I understood intellectually that none of that was true, but somewhere I harbored the resentment.  That realization was heart breaking for me and made the reality of the memories even more miserable.  But, as I continued to listen and watch, and saw the children taking these men their little drawings of hope, I realized that they were people just like me.  They wanted the madness to end just like me, and just like me they were also heart broken about what happened ten years ago.  And, just as quickly, the anger and resentment left.  I made it a point to talk with them, and to thank them for coming, and to talk to the imam as well … All that to say, I’m glad I came because I never would have recognized the resentment and anger I had held onto for so long.  It was a moment of healing for me, and something I won’t forget for a long time.”
“I regret that neither my husband nor any of my friends were able to join me this morning…  it’s hard to explain to them the magnitude of the service (although I have been trying all day).  The children walking in with the doves and spreading hope brought me to tears.  The “And Then” poem and the way you and the other religious leaders orchestrated its reading was so lovely and intense.  “Imagine” sung by so many of different ages and different backgrounds… wow.  It was just such a beautiful experience.”
“What a WONDERFUL service at Montview Church.  Truly inspirational.  Extremely well done.  So much variety.  I’m so glad it was packed! The “And Then”s were so insightful and touching to have each “minister” say something  brought it so close to home.  The Beatles “Imagine” brought out the tears and the kleenex!  Thank you!
“As I look back over all the interfaith events we attended this weekend I consider the service at Montview one of the outstanding highlights. I hope it’s just the beginning of a new alliance among all our Park Hill congregations. Congratulations and gratitude for all you did to make it happen!”
“Sunday’s 9/11 service at Montview was deeply moving. It was very apparent how much planning went into the service and how well the various clergy worked together. There was even a clip of the service on Colorado Public Radio. Many thanks for the wonderful service!”
“I overheard someone say, “That was the best interfaith service I’ve ever been to.”  It certainly was an inspiring service and worship.  I imagine it took many long hours to plan.  The silent procession of many, many doves is the visual I’ll remember.  It is without doubt that all in attendance yesterday were moved and inspired.  Thanks for agreeing to do this and for all your work in making the morning memorable.”

New Worship Hours Beginning September 18

New Worship Hours Beginning September 18

A Special Letter to the Congregation
For more than 100 years, Montview has been a church open to changing with the needs of its congregation and the world.  We believe this is one of the many reasons we are still going strong today.
In that light, we have discussed – at length – and adopted a new Sunday morning schedule in response to members’ input.  With help from our Children’s, Worship and Music, and Adult Education committees, we have designed a new schedule with several things in mind.  This new schedule shortens the morning.  It helps families to spend more time with their children.  It allows for an intentional fellowship time.  And it helps us preserve important opportunities for our children to participate in worship services.
Beginning on September 18th, we will no longer have church services at 8:30 and 11:00 am.  The new worship times will be 8:15 and 10:30.  Other programs adjust as follows:
Adults
8:15  Early Worship Service
9:15 to 10:15 Adult Education
10:00    Adult Choir Rehearsal
10:30  Worship Service
11:30  Fellowship in the Commons
Children
9:15 to 10:10 Sunday School (Toddler & Pre-school)
9:15 to 9:40 Cantate Choir (K-2)
9:15 to 9:40 Sharing with Sandy (Grades 3-5)
9:45 to 10:20 Sunday School (K-5)
In this rapidly changing world, our readiness to be a flexible, open and welcoming church is vital to the health and strength of our congregation.  Time and time again, Montview has proven its willingness to embrace change with enthusiasm and passion.  Please join us as we continue to seek new ways to bring people closer to Christ Jesus and to be the church God calls us to be.  If you have questions or would just like more information on how we arrived at the schedule, please give us a call.
With gratitude and excitement,
Cindy and Ian (on behalf of the Session)
