Adult Education

Education for adults takes a variety of forms including Sunday morning classes, lectureships, retreats, and the Center for Spiritual Life. The primary vehicle is on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 am (except in summer).  At that hour we offer a number of classes described below.  These classes meet every Sunday unless a churchwide forum is scheduled.

Foundations For Faith

Foundations For Faith is the core of our educational program.  It consists of 14 core courses in four areas:  Bible, Theology, Christian History, and Life of Faith.  Typically there are one or two of these 14 courses offered at any one time throughout the year.

September 26 – October 24
Narrative Ethics and the Christian Faith.

As part of Montview’s Foundations for Faith series, Dr. Buie Seawell of the University of Denver will present a five-week series on Narrative Ethics and the Christian Faith. Dr. Seawell is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Business Ethics and Legal Studies and was honored in 2003 with the University’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award. He has an extensive background in public policy and politics in addition to being an ordained Presbyterian minister.  Join us for what is sure to be a thought-provoking series!

49ers Contemporary Forum

49ers Contemporary Forum is a class that addresses topics of interest within our church and around the world.  Each Sunday the class is different, so it is easy to ‘drop in’ and explore a new topic each week.  This class typically meets in the McCollum Room.

September 12 •  Montview: A Culture of Giving – McCollum Room
Join us, Sunday, September 12th, at 9:35 a.m., in the McCollum Room, for coffee, goodies, conversation and stories of Montview members who have been instrumental in creating this remarkable faith community. Together, we’ll launch this year’s stewardship campaign, Montview: A Culture of Giving.

Why come?  The caffeine and goodies certainly will fulfill your need for nourishment, and the stories are guaranteed to feed your soul. Beyond that, there’s much about what goes on at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church that we often miss in the hustle and bustle of Sunday mornings, daytime and evening committee meetings, and other gatherings here at the church and elsewhere. Between 9:35 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., you’ll have the chance to pause, listen, learn, and reflect on what makes Montview a culture of giving. We hope to see you, September 12th. – The 2010 Stewardship Committee: Lorraine Alcott, Cindy Cearley, John Howell, Chip King, Bob Longway, Craig Maginness, Mary Medley, Mark Richardson, Phil Worth, Grover Wrenn

P.S. Worry not. This won’t be a plea for your money. It’s an invitation to give yourself the time to appreciate the culture of giving here at Montview, as told through stories of the past, present, and future. Don’t miss it!

September 19 • Envision Committee Listening Session – Fellowship Hall
Join us during the education hour for an interactive discussion and presentation of the Envision survey findings.

It’s an exciting time for all of us who sense that Montview is starting another new chapter in its 108 year-old history as a faith community.  Montview is well positioned among protestant churches to lead the way in feeding our hunger for genuine spiritual nourishment.  We are limited only by our capacity to answer the question:  How can we continue to grow spiritually in a changing world and still maintain the traditions we truly cherish?

We invite you to ponder not just the Montview you love today, but the Montview we are called to create for tomorrow.  What elements of today’s Montview are we ready to release to its rich history?  What new elements should we pioneer?  How can we develop, fund and staff tomorrow’s Montview in a time of fiscal erosion when our desires exceed our resources?

September 26 • Tackling Fiscal Reform: Values and Vision – McCollum Room
Carol Hedges, Senior Analyst with Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute – Carol will provide an overview of the fiscal challenges currently facing our state in the context of what kind of a state we want Colorado to be. In particular, she will discuss the far-reaching impacts of three November ballot issues  – Amendments 60 & 61 and Proposition 101.
