faith

During the last four weeks before we break for summer the Adult Education Committee invites you to come to the Fellowship Hall during the 9:30 hour to learn more about Foundations For Faith. This is the name of the new Adult Education format that begins when we return on September 14th. Foundations For Faith is a series of 14 classes designed to give all of us at Montview a core understanding of our faith tradition that is relevant and meaningful in today’s world. It is divided into four core areas – Bible, History, Theology, and Life of Faith, with classes in each of these areas. Join us on each of the following Sundays to learn more about the program with the help of professors from the Iliff School of Theology.

April 27 • Well, the Bible Says...
Dr. Mark George, Assoc. Professor of Hebrew Bible,
Iliff School of Theology

May 4 • Theologians Do It Better

49ers Contemporary Forum
An educational forum for all ages • 9:30 AM

April 27th • Rabbi Brian Mayer will address how the Old Testament Torah context is misunderstood when we misuse Biblical lines to attack homosexuality. Rabbi Brian appears in the movie “For the Bible Tells Me So,” which follows the moving stories of a number of Christian families’ pain and transformation when they encounter their children’s homosexuality. The Rabbi has a bridge-building ministry across the nation that seeks to free God from the box in which religions tend to place God. His appearance at Montview Church is sponsored by our Peace and Justice Task Force.

May 4th • Representing the Prisoners at Guantanamo Bay - Rick Bailey
Mr. Bailey, along with a number of other attorneys at Holland & Hart, has had the privilege to represent, on a pro bono basis, five detainees at Guantanamo Bay Cuba. Mr. Bailey will speak about the rule of law, the entitlement to a fair hearing, and why he believes that even the “worst of the worst” (as the Guantanamo Bay prisoners have been described by the United States government) should be entitled to the right to counsel, the right to a hearing, and the right to confront the evidence and witnesses against them. He will explain that some of these detainees have simply been caught up in a wide net and have no way to prove their innocence for years on end. He will also speak about the importance of the “Great Writ” of Habeas Corpus to our tradition as a free nation. Rick Bailey is a Partner at Holland and Hart’s Denver Tech Center office, where he is the practice group manager for Holland and Hart’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group. Prior to joining Holland & Hart, Mr. Bailey was the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for AT&T Broadband, which was at the time the largest cable television and broadband company in the U.S.

May 11th • Housewife of the Senate - Pat Pascoe
When women won the vote in Colorado in 1893, they began to elect women to public office. First women were elected to the House, and then Colorado’s first woman State Senator was elected in 1912. She was Helen Ring Robinson, a former teacher and writer who described herself as the Housewife of the Senate because she looked after the interests of women and children there. She passed a minimum wage bill for women and tried, unsuccessfully to allow women to serve on juries. Former Senator Pat Pascoe will talk about Helen’s life as a state senator and international suffrage leader and peace activist.

May 18th • A Bridge to Haiti - Chris Strock
Co-Pastor Greg Cummins invites us to join his cousin, Chris Strock, who is in town to share his experience working in Haiti. Chris is a PhD. student in engineering at Virginia Tech and a few years ago fell in love with the people and land of Haiti. He has since made several trips to Haiti to work toward safer living conditions. “Chris is a remarkable young man - his vision, passion, and optimism are contageous.” says Pastor Greg. Chris will make a presentation about his most current project - a much needed bridge to help people travel safely to medical help and other life necessities. Pastor Greg is interested in the possibility of Montview planning a future mission trip to Haiti. Come and learn more.
