Bart Ehrman, the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor and former Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will speak at Montview on Friday, March 7th and Saturday, March 8th, as part of Montview’s Lectureship Series.
Ehrman received his Ph. D and M. Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary. Ehrman was an Evangelical Christian as a teen. He graduated from the Moody Bible Institute, then graduated from Wheaton College with a B.A. His desire to study the original words of the Bible led him to study ancient languages and texts. This led him to reassess his faith; he now considers himself an agnostic.
Professor Ehrman is an expert on the Gnostic Gospels, publishing extensively in the areas of New Testament and early Christianity, having written or edited nineteen books, as well as writing numerous articles and reviewing several books. He currently serves as co-editor of the series New Testament Tools and Studies (E. J. Brill) and on several other editorial boards for monographs in the field.
Ehrman recently wrote the book The Lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot: A New Look at Betrayer and Betrayed, after being part of a nine member Codex advisory panel for National Geographic, in its work on the TV special The Lost Gospel of Judas. He is also author of the recent New York Times best selling book Misquoting Jesus.
Professor Ehrman’s lecture times will be 7:30 p. m. Friday, March 7th and 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8th. A patron’s dinner will occur Friday, March 7th at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, he will speak on the subject of Lost Christianities and Rediscovered Gospels: New Insights into the Old-Time Religion. On Saturday, he will speak about The Recently Discovered Gospel of Judas Iscariot. Ticket prices are $30 for both lectures, $20 for any one lecture. A patron’s ticket of $75 includes both lectures and the patrons’ dinner. Students are free (with valid id), and scholarships are available.
