If you have ever tried to paint with watercolors, you can appreciate his control of this fluid medium.</p><p>This painting required much time focused on a beautiful arrangement of very few flowers. This artist seems to notice every morsel of these, even down to the blue green and yellow green stems. In this flower season, have you made the time to do the same? Have you breathed in to the artistry of our Creator in for a minute or two or many more?</p><p>This pause, this sabbath, seems the call of <em>Red and Yellow Poppies with a Blue Delphinium</em>,<em> </em>as even reading the title takes more time than most. It seems to call us to not only stop and smell the roses but to carefully take them in visually. These artistic moments are open to everyone and help all of us find gravity again in these unpredictable times. Beauty is God’s gift to us. Art in all forms across time and space and types can truly be a salvation found in focus.</p><p>God is the inspiration of all creativity and bidden or not bidden is present. May we notice and give thanks. <p><b>*The Baptismal Creed </b><i>(Unison)</i><b><br /></b>In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in    the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Creator, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. (<i>Excerpted from A Brief Statement of Faith.)</i></p>

He was troubled, misunderstood and rejected in his own time.</p><p>His art is bold, colorful, dramatic, driven, impulsive, expressive and recognizable. His use of thick paint called impasto and broad brushstrokes seems to add a sense of exclamation to his every view. Vincent’s father was a minister and it can be easy to see his inherited deep honoring of God’s creation in his work.</p><p><em>Green Wheat Fields</em> is just such an interpretation of spring. His tints and shades of green, blue and also yellow can take your breath in appreciation. His pieces and this one are quizzical, holding both peace and frenetic energy. They are quiet scenes in hymns to creation with paints pushed onto canvas quickly as if time was running out. . . which in retrospect it actually was. Over the years, many have concluded that this artist lived and worked in the very place where madness and creativity converge. Maybe he could have only found his genius there.</p><p>As Vincent cut off his ear and took his own life, we must hope he knew something of God’s loving commitment to him beyond the critics of the world. We pray his eventual, posthumous acclaim can steer each of us from our judgements of art or anything else. May Vincent van Gogh help us leave the ugly, unsettling and hateful out of our thoughts and focus on the world he saw, a beautiful celebration of newness and hopeful perspectives. If an ordinary sky and field we all see can look like that to someone, what is there to hold but hope?</p><p>May it be so.</p><p>Amen.</p><p>In gratitude, faith and hope,</p></div><div class="x_elementToProof">Sandy Prouty<br />Minister of Children and Families<br />Montview Church</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div> </div>

Her story is filled with resiliency and grace. Here is her quote about her family’s internment:</p><p>“I hold no hostilities for what happened; I blame no one. Sometimes good comes through adversity. I would not be who I am today had it not been for the internment, and I like who I am.” </p><p>Later she was denied a teaching credential because of her heritage. She said:</p><p>“I was told that it might be difficult for me, with the memories of the war still fresh, to work in a public school. My life might even be in danger. This was a godsend, because it encouraged me to follow my interest in art, and I subsequently enrolled at Black Mountain College in North Carolina.”</p><p>She continued to be in the life she was given through her art. Ruth Asawa is best known for her looped wire sculptures inspired by the basket crocheting she saw on a trip to Mexico. She was also a sculptor and made prints at the Tamarind Institute, a lithography workshop. Ruth Asawa was the driving force behind the creation of the San Francisco School of the Arts, a public alternative high school that now bears her name. Her wire sculptures were featured by the United States Postal Service with a stamp series in 2020.</p><p>Her art is displayed in prestigious collections and museums and in public places across the country. And did I mention she had six children!</p><p>Ruth Asawa believed in art, was inspired by nature, and moved around each “no” she received to find her way, exploring possibilities, making interesting things.</p><p>Her print<em>, Spring</em>, is an interesting take on a season that seems to explode and splatter in many greens. This print might also capture what this season can mean to a busy family trying to navigate all their opportunities and obligations. It could almost be seen as a map, a bird’s eye view, of what can be both exciting and binding.</p><p>Ruth Asawa stepped out of the culture in many ways, always believing in art. She pushed through many walls. She went around others.</p><p>We give thanks for her spirit and grit, her art making and service, her honesty and blameless perspective. May our days be inspired by Ruth Asawa. Thanks be to God.</p><p>In gratitude, faith and hope,</p></div><div class="x_elementToProof">Sandy Prouty<br />Minister of Children and Families<br />Montview Church</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div> </div>

He is often referred to as the Father of Modern Art. Picasso is quoted as saying Cezanne was his one and only master.</p><p>Cezanne’s body of work includes portraits, landscapes and the remarkable still lifes. He arranged objects of everyday life and painted the details and beauty hidden in the ordinary. His detailed arrangements often included fabric, fruit, and glassware. His repetitive brushstrokes and color modulations add a depth and elegance to these works. Whether we look at the whole composition or focus on a small area, we can be moved into Cezanne’s extravagant style and maybe never see a piece of fruit or a glass or a tablecloth in the same way.</p><p>These pieces also bring us peace in their busyness. Even with all of his technique’s movement, his patterns, and his color variations, Cezanne captured the stillness of objects that surround us and invites us to sit a while and just look, truly look, at things to which we may now be blind.</p><p>The work of this master seems so countercultural. Why would you carefully arrange common things and paint the scene for hours, devoted to all of the surfaces and shapes? Maybe each painting came from the spirit and was actually a spiritual practice. Maybe each of the many similar still life paintings by Cezanne was a statement of gratitude for the beauty of the natural and man-made worlds. He and we also can honor and give thanks for our abundance with the attention art requires. We can notice and we might even draw or paint what we see! Why don’t we try?!? </p><p>Thanks be to God and Amen.</p><p>In gratitude, faith and hope,</p><p>Sandy Prouty<br />Minister of Children and Families<br />Montview Church</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div> </div>
