He is often referred to as the Father of Modern Art. Picasso is quoted as saying Cezanne was his one and only master.

Cezanne’s body of work includes portraits, landscapes and the remarkable still lifes. He arranged objects of everyday life and painted the details and beauty hidden in the ordinary. His detailed arrangements often included fabric, fruit, and glassware. His repetitive brushstrokes and color modulations add a depth and elegance to these works. Whether we look at the whole composition or focus on a small area, we can be moved into Cezanne’s extravagant style and maybe never see a piece of fruit or a glass or a tablecloth in the same way.

These pieces also bring us peace in their busyness. Even with all of his technique’s movement, his patterns, and his color variations, Cezanne captured the stillness of objects that surround us and invites us to sit a while and just look, truly look, at things to which we may now be blind.

The work of this master seems so countercultural. Why would you carefully arrange common things and paint the scene for hours, devoted to all of the surfaces and shapes? Maybe each painting came from the spirit and was actually a spiritual practice. Maybe each of the many similar still life paintings by Cezanne was a statement of gratitude for the beauty of the natural and man-made worlds. He and we also can honor and give thanks for our abundance with the attention art requires. We can notice and we might even draw or paint what we see! Why don’t we try?!?

Thanks be to God and Amen.

In gratitude, faith and hope,

Sandy Prouty
Minister of Children and Families
Montview Church

He was educated at the Parsons Institute of Design in New York City and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He created with pencil and watercolor, taking us with him on his frequent solitary times away from people, including his family. He was driven to discover beauty in nature without the overlays of generalizations and judgements which plague human seeing. We often let what we already know and have seen fade the viewing of what is right in front of us in any moment. We tend to discount more than pause and feast.

Walter Inglis Anderson is quoted as saying, “Everything I see is strange and new.” This deep, clear seeing is captured in the Road to Oldfields, which he traveled often to visit his wife’s parents. The many muted colors of this work with lapis blue interruptions and the “fanciful” patterns of trees, bushes and road, might call us to a fresh view also. He believed in the transformative power of art with his views inspiring the eyes of others.

This man was driven to create at the expense of those driven to love him – his family members whom he left often to be a painter hermit. This is a story often written in the annals of families though, in this case, art was the pull.

We seem called to offer our forgiveness and then look again at the choices and accomplishments of this artist. Life seems filled with this rhythmic, sometimes desperate, challenge of forgiveness and healing.

Our prayers for these days of violence and hateful language might include this rhythm. A time in nature like this artist to heal and restore might be our silent offering.

Lord of beauty, wisdom and peace, please hear our prayers. Amen.

In gratitude, faith and hope,

Sandy Prouty
Minister of Children and Families
Montview Church

He signed his works as The Greek to maintain this heritage. El Greco made art that startled viewers of his day as he moved from the flat and static style of the icon to dynamic compositions with depth and expression. His works, including this piece, the altarpiece of the Sacristy of the Cathedral in Toledo, mainly puzzled said viewers. Appreciation came later in the 20th century.

El Greco is known for elongated figures as shown here most clearly in the hands of subjects and in even the format being longer than wide.

This crowded scene seems to convey the chaos of the moment as Jesus is prepared for execution. Here depth is held in size and color. The neutral and menacing colors of the background with its sea of faces is in deep contrast to the fuller depictions and bright colors of the foreground figures, including Jesus. His bright robe and heavenward gaze seem to separate him from the reality around him. He seems in the world but not of it – maybe already seeing himself in the kingdom to come.

This piece could be at the center of a Lectio Visio practice for Holy Week. These are the steps. After spending some time surveying the piece and finding your visual focus, you could listen for words that come as you imagine the scene and put yourself within it. You could think of how it sounded, how it felt. The final step of this spiritual practice would be to form a prayer around what came to you in this time of silent looking and listening. You could make a prayer for these times or our own. You could write a prayer of hope in resignation; faith in trial; love and forgiveness in all things. I hope you will. May it be so and amen.

In gratitude, faith and hope,

Sandy Prouty
Minister of Children and Families
Montview Church

7:30pm

THE SERVICE OF TENEBRAE
The service of Tenebrae (Latin for “shadows”) follows a tradition of the church dating back at least to the 8th century, and perhaps as early as the 5th century after Christ. The liturgy dramatizes the suffering, death and burial of Jesus through the reading of Scripture and singing of psalms, hymns and anthems. The mood of the service moves from day to night, symbolizing the fading devotion of the disciples. At the end of the service, the church is dark. There is no benediction. We are asked to leave silently contemplating the crucifixion.

Sometimes they strew His way, And His sweet praises sing;
Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King:
Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, And for His death they thirst and cry.

They rise and needs will have, My dear Lord made away;
A murderer they saved, The Prince of life they slay,
Yet cheerful He to suffering goes, That He His foes from thence might free.

Here might I stay and sing, No story so divine;
Never was love, dear King! Never was grief like Thine.
This is my Friend, in Whose sweet praise, I all my days could gladly spend.

Text – Samuel Crossman

The Darkness of Injustice
Mark 14:43-65; 15:1-5
Sandy Prouty

MAUNDY THURSDAY

7:30pm

THE SERVICE OF MAUNDY THURSDAY
On this night we mark Jesus’ last supper with his disciples. The next day he dies on the cross.

Maundy Thursday is the first day of the triduum, the crossover point between life and death for Jesus, between death and life for us all.

Maundy Thursday receives its name from the Latin word mandatum which means command. It refers to our Lord’s commandment in the Gospel,

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another even as I have loved you.” John 13:34

Prelude
Love Unknown
arr. Matthew H. Corl (b. 1965)

Welcome

*Call to Worship
Leader: We are gathered in a time of remembrance.
People: We are together in spirit and faith.
Leader: On this night of his last meal, we are present to the life of Jesus,
People: To his lived expressions of acceptance and service,
Leader: To his way of love, generous and abiding.
All: Thanks be to God.

*Opening Hymn
202 An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare (O Waly Waly)

Homily and Readings

First Reading John 13:3-11

Second Reading John 13:12-18

Homily As I Have

Musical Reflection
Ubi Caritas
Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986)
Sung in Latin

Where charity and love are, God is there.
The love of Christ has gathered us into one.
Let us rejoice and delight in Him.
Let us fear and love the living God,
And let us honor Him with a sincere heart. Amen

THE LORD’S SUPPER

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Gracious God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You have been faithful to us through all generations and continue to speak to us today. We praise you for this table of love you spread in the world as a sign of your love for all people. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join in their unending song.

Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer (Unison)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

*Prayer of Gratitude (Unison)
Gracious God, you have made us one with all your people in heaven and earth. You have fed us with the bread of life and renewed us for your service. Help us, who have shared Christ’s body and received his cup, to be faithful disciples, so that our daily living may reflect your presence among us, and our love be your love, reaching out into the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is our tradition for the pastors to bless the palms by sprinkling the congregation with water.

*Confession of Brokenness
Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, over the brokenness of our world,
the rumors meant to hurt, the prejudice meant to wound,
the weapons meant to kill, ride on,
All: Ride on in Peace.
Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, over the distance
which separates us from you, a distance measurable in half truths,
in un-kept promises, in second-best obedience, ride on,
All: Ride on in Grace.
Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, through the back streets
of our lives where we fear to go into the darkness
to reveal the secrets that lurk there;
where human life festers and love runs cold;
where faith loses its warmth, ride on,
All: Ride on in Hope.

And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join in their unending song.
