Her early life included the death of her father and her adoption by the Terk family, which afforded her a precious formal education. She found art and pushed toward a prolific and prestigious career marked in 1964 by her being the first living female artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre. Her work is displayed in museums and collections around the world. She donated all of her remaining work to the Pompidou in Paris before her death.</p><p>Sonia and her husband, Robert, co-founded an abstraction movement called Orphism (1911-1912), based on the belief that visual art should be as lyrical and harmonious as music. Sonia believed in color and geometry, saw these in all things, and used this inspiration on canvas, textiles, interior design, even cars. She lived in an age of invention and became a master inventor herself.</p><p>I appreciate the story behind this abstracted, geometric piece. It is the reaction of this artist to the new invention of electric lamplights on the streets of Paris. She was fascinated by the glow and light patterns these created and painted from her moments of new wonder. The seemingly inserted rectangle toward the left continues our own spirit of wonder.</p><p>This artist was a pioneer of observation and uniquely painted gratitude. May we also notice the new pieces of our own landscapes and give thanks in our own ways. We are grateful for the artists who remind us the world is glorious and our praise can be unceasing. Thanks be to God.</p><p>In gratitude, faith and hope,</p></div><div class="x_elementToProof">Sandy Prouty<br />Minister of Children and Families<br />Montview Church</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div> </div>

His father, an activist, had been deported to America and Ben immigrated as a child with the rest of his Jewish family soon after. He became an artist of print and paint in Social Realism. His early career focused on protest of his times. He painted the human condition, its pain and injustice, with sharp political edges. His works spoke of The Depression, The Dust Bowl, World Wars, and the indomitable human spirit. He is quoted as saying that he only created around what he loved and what he abhorred. His later works focused on his loves including this piece on working the land. It is a screenprint with watercolor. It is a work of simple subtleties and complex considerations. Do you see endurance, rebirth, and hope?</p><p>He is quoted as saying:</p><p>“If we are to have values, a spiritual life, a culture, these things must find their imagery and their interpretation through the art.”</p><p>Ben Shahn believed that art had the power “to lift the level of perceptivity, to increase and enrich the average individual’s store of values.”</p><p>Thanks be to God for those who speak with brush and pen, with bow and keyboard, with genius of mind, body and spirit guiding us again and again to what is good and right and true. <p><b>Sacrament of Holy Baptism </b><i>(11:00am</i><i>) </i><b> </b></p>
<p><b>*The Baptismal Creed </b><i>(Unison)</i><b><br /></b>In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. We trust in the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Creator, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. (<i>Excerpted from A Brief Statement of Faith.)</i></p>
<p><b>The Presentation<br /></b>Pastor: This candle represents the new life in Christ. It is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. May all who have received this sacrament walk as children of the light and may God keep the flame of faith alive in them forever.<br /><b>People: With joy and thanksgiving, we welcome you into Christ’s church, to share with us this ministry, for we are all one in Christ. If you have ever tried to paint with watercolors, you can appreciate his control of this fluid medium.</p><p>This painting required much time focused on a beautiful arrangement of very few flowers. This artist seems to notice every morsel of these, even down to the blue green and yellow green stems. In this flower season, have you made the time to do the same? Have you breathed in to the artistry of our Creator in for a minute or two or many more?</p><p>This pause, this sabbath, seems the call of <em>Red and Yellow Poppies with a Blue Delphinium</em>,<em> </em>as even reading the title takes more time than most. It seems to call us to not only stop and smell the roses but to carefully take them in visually. These artistic moments are open to everyone and help all of us find gravity again in these unpredictable times. Beauty is God’s gift to us. Art in all forms across time and space and types can truly be a salvation found in focus.</p><p>God is the inspiration of all creativity and bidden or not bidden is present. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. He was troubled, misunderstood and rejected in his own time.</p><p>His art is bold, colorful, dramatic, driven, impulsive, expressive and recognizable. His use of thick paint called impasto and broad brushstrokes seems to add a sense of exclamation to his every view. Vincent’s father was a minister and it can be easy to see his inherited deep honoring of God’s creation in his work.</p><p><em>Green Wheat Fields</em> is just such an interpretation of spring. His tints and shades of green, blue and also yellow can take your breath in appreciation. His pieces and this one are quizzical, holding both peace and frenetic energy. They are quiet scenes in hymns to creation with paints pushed onto canvas quickly as if time was running out. . . which in retrospect it actually was. Over the years, many have concluded that this artist lived and worked in the very place where madness and creativity converge. Maybe he could have only found his genius there.</p><p>As Vincent cut off his ear and took his own life, we must hope he knew something of God’s loving commitment to him beyond the critics of the world. We pray his eventual, posthumous acclaim can steer each of us from our judgements of art or anything else. May Vincent van Gogh help us leave the ugly, unsettling and hateful out of our thoughts and focus on the world he saw, a beautiful celebration of newness and hopeful perspectives. If an ordinary sky and field we all see can look like that to someone, what is there to hold but hope?</p><p>May it be so.</p><p>Amen.</p><p>In gratitude, faith and hope,</p></div><div class="x_elementToProof">Sandy Prouty<br />Minister of Children and Families<br />Montview Church</div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div> </div>

You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You have been faithful to us through all generations and continue to speak to us today. We praise you for this table of love you spread in the world as a sign of your love for all people. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join in their unending song.</p>
