Art Reflection - Tissot

James Tissot (1836-1902) was a French artist who moved from a career in fashion illustration to creating a body of religious works like The Magnificat.

This piece, opaque watercolor over graphite on gray woven paper, depicts Mary’s visit to Zechariah and Elizabeth and her Song of Praise (Luke 1:39-55). Tissot shows Mary in a garden saying her prayer as Elizabeth and Zechariah watch, enthralled. All three are joined in love, in the mystery of creation, and in God’s blessings upon them.

As we once again move through the ancient story, may we remember to pause often and give God thanks and praise for this scene and for the births and lives of two babies soon to be born – John and Jesus. Thanks be to God.

 In gratitude, faith and hope,
