Art Reflection - Bemelmans

Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962) was an Austrian American writer and illustrator of books for children and adults. He worked mainly in pen and ink, watercolor and gouache. He aspired to oils also, though most of his projects needed to be completed quickly and that medium was not suitable.

Bemelmans is best remembered for the Madeline picture book series. He wrote the first in 1939. He also worked for The New Yorker and painted murals in New York City. You can see one of these in the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel on East 76th Street.

This artist’s style is based on vibrant colors and much movement. His dynamic style was perfect for following twelve little girls through a whimsical interpretation of Paris and reflect also his working quickly. They are filled with contagious emotions and many happy endings.

The piece shared here goes with this text:

And here we’re back – all twelve no less – Happy New Year and Togetherness!

This illustration sold for $75,000 in 2017.  Let’s once again seek and find gratitude for this vintage page in our divided world. Thank you, Ludwig Bemelmans, for your faithful, lasting work and thanks be to God for the inspiration and love you drew and painted – bidden or not bidden.

 In gratitude, faith and hope,
