Art Reflection - Kershisnik

Utah based artist, Brian Kershisnik (1962 -) is one I turn to often. He seems to represent the human experience and condition in both emblematic and quizzical ways. His pieces, painting and prints, pulled from these, are not quickly analyzed or concluded.

Fall Coming Like Three Sisters is a faithful example of his work. His childhood involved travelling the world following his father’s petroleum career with his family. He experienced so many varied contexts to draw from and in which to discover the unknowable. He now keeps the questions intact as he creates.

This piece with a high horizon line, muted tones, and dark trees nearly bare and cropped, leads our eyes down to the three subjects. They are the colors and stages of fall walking along together as change personified. Their dresses and hands speak nearly illegible volumes.

What do we make of this scene? What do we each bring to it? And my constant question – where is God in this?

May our prayer be to give thanks for an artist’s view and imagination. May we spend some time focusing on the beauty of these sisters and also on the gorgeous and lingering fall that is ours this year. This artist seems to call us to the art of God. May it be so and amen.

In gratitude, faith and hope,
