Fran Sosa is a contemporary artist from Argentina. He often, reminiscent of Van Gogh, works with oil and palette knife to create the impasto effect here. He is captivated by “scapes” – land, sea and city – and paints in Impressionism and Expressionism.
Last Light, exhibited in Paris, exemplifies his work and is in addition a color study. The complementary colors of violet and yellow layered in tints, shades and tertiary hues help our eyes journey from bottom to top and back again. This piece pulls our imaginations to many and varied explanations both familiar and newborn.
Time spent with this artist and his work can be part of a Visio Divina spiritual practice. The steps of this ancient meditative practice of sacred seeing are first to survey the entire image. Next to notice a portion that calls most loudly to you. Third to spend some still time looking and listening for the words that come and lastly discerning a prayer with language written for you in this paint.
What do you see here? What does it say to you in quiet moments? What language does it inspire? What is your prayer of gratitude? Do you now have prayers of petition for yourself, for others and our world?
We give thanks for this artist and for this practice. May we find deep prayers written in the visual of each day. Thanks be to our Creator God. Amen.
In gratitude, faith and hope,
Last Light | Fran Sosa
