The Tenebrae of Good Friday

7:30pm

THE SERVICE OF TENEBRAE
The service of Tenebrae (Latin for “shadows”) follows a tradition of the church dating back at least to the 8th century, and perhaps as early as the 5th century after Christ. The liturgy dramatizes the suffering, death and burial of Jesus through the reading of Scripture and singing of psalms, hymns and anthems. The mood of the service moves from day to night, symbolizing the fading devotion of the disciples. At the end of the service, the church is dark. There is no benediction. We are asked to leave silently contemplating the crucifixion.

Libera Me, from Requiem
Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)

Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death,
on that terrible day:
when the heavens and earth will be shaken;
when you will come to judge the age with fire.
I am made to tremble, and I am afraid,
since trial and anger are coming.

That day, a day of anger, disaster and sorrow,
That day, a mighty day, and one exceedingly bitter.
Give them eternal rest, Lord,
and may light perpetual shine upon them.

The Darkness of Temptation
Matthew 26:30-31, 36-46

My Song is Love Unknown
Arlen Clarke (b. 1954)

My song is love unknown, My Savior’s love to me;
Love to the loveless shown, That they might lovely be.
O who am I, that for my sake, My Lord should take, frail flesh and die?

He came from His blest throne, Salvation to bestow;
But men made strange, and none, The longed for Christ would know:
But O! my Friend, my Friend indeed, Who at my need His life did spend.

Sometimes they strew His way, And His sweet praises sing;
Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King:
Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, And for His death they thirst and cry.

They rise and needs will have, My dear Lord made away;
A murderer they saved, The Prince of life they slay,
Yet cheerful He to suffering goes, That He His foes from thence might free.

Here might I stay and sing, No story so divine;
Never was love, dear King! Never was grief like Thine.
This is my Friend, in Whose sweet praise, I all my days could gladly spend.
